Information Extraction (IE) refers to the automatic extraction of structured information—such as entities, relationships between entities, and attribute descriptions of entities—from unstructured sources.

In other words, this field focuses on converting unstructured text (such as documents, websites, news articles) into structured, machine-readable data.

  • Entities: Persons, organizations, locations, dates, numbers
  • Relationships: Connections between entities such as "born in", "employed by", "located in"
  • Attributes: Descriptive characteristics of entities such as color, size, price
